Lennox Bacela scores Philips’ sponsorship
Philips is proud to announce their newest Be Sharp male grooming ambassador, South African football player Lennox Bacela.
The talented striker – who likes a clean face and closely shaven head – will occasionally rock a moustache if he feels like changing it up. “I shave my head every week, and very rarely visit a barber,” he notes. “Style-wise, I’m the kind of guy who’s all about comfort. When I’m not in my training gear, I’m in my jeans,” says the self-assured Lennox.
“You can say my hair has gone through a lot!,” laughs Lennox. “There’s a lot of hype around the game of football in South Africa, both on the field and off, so my personal style has adapted to this. If the guys want to do a similar hairstyle for a game it’s a team decision, or if I want to stand out I’ll try something a little different, depending on the event.”
For a guy who likes comfort, Lennox effortlessly pulls off just about anything. His slick urban dress sense and great shape dictates a slim fit from head to toe, so you’ll most often catch him in a well-fitted pair of jeans and tailored shirt or tee, depending on what’s on the agenda. For a night out he’ll don a pair of smart loafers and finish with a blazer. “Too easy,” he says.
“My best advice to guys would be to dress how you feel most comfortable,” he says. And, when it comes to personal grooming? “Go for what suits your individual face shape, find what works for you, and stick with that. Your hairstyle should always suit your personality, and match your vibe,” states Lennox.
Following his studies at the University of Western Cape where he obtained a BCom degree, the Knysna-born striker quickly rose through the ranks of the Premier Soccer League, moving from Engen Santos to Bloemfontein Celtic, and eventually securing a coveted position last year with one of South Africa’s best loved soccer teams, Orlando Pirates.
But the determined sportsman’s journey has been an interesting one, far from your usual rags to riches story and filled with strong-minded direction. At one stage in his career there were a few options on the table but he knew what he wanted and stuck with it. Also a talented rugby player, Lennox was offered a position with London rugby union club Saracens.
However his loyalty to the game of soccer was much stronger which saw him give up his job as a financial clerk, turn down the offer to play professional rugby, and followed his dream of becoming a full-time football player. “I’m definitely a numbers man and had I not made it as a professional sportsman I’d probably have been an accountant,” he says, looking back at his career.
Philips is proud to be associated with the ambitious soccer star as Lennox represents all that the innovative brand stands for. “Lennox is a modern man and a go-getter of note. His confidence, determination and focus makes him an ideal ‘Be Sharp ambassador who we are thrilled to work with,” says Jolene Roelofse, Philips Marketing Manager: Personal Care.
“It’s really exciting to be associated with a global grooming brand like Philips. Our relationship is going to be awesome,” hints Lennox playfully.
