Bosman Family Vineyards retains Top 100 Wines position

Bosman Family Vineyards has once again made the list of Top 100 SA Wines, this time three of its wines winning favour with the authoritative panel of international judges. The announcement was made during a gala function at Rodwell House boutique hotel in St James, Cape Town this week.

Bosman Family Vineyards has consistently featured in the championship. Every year since its inception, the list of Top 100 SA Wines has included two wines from the estate. This year, the Bosman Pinotage 2011 replaces no less than two previous vintages that have been on the podium and shares honours with the Bosman MCC Steen 2008, and Bosman Erfenis 2011.

“Our vineyards have established a reputation for delivering outstanding fruit” says Bosman Family Vineyards winemaker Corlea Fourie. The fact that our efforts in showing off these fruit in carefully executed wines, and the recognition thereof once again in South Africa’s Top 100, is valuable affirmation for our team.

The list of Top 100 SA Wines is compiled annually by connoisseurs that include international Masters of Wine. The selection panel this year was again chaired by British author and wine judge Tim Atkin MW. Wines are tasted blind over the course of three days before the top performers are singled out.

The Bosman Family Pinotage was conceived with the aim of being world class and the 2011 incarnation is a proud representative of this. It comes from a 20 year-old vineyard planted with exceptional vines specifically selected by Jannie Bosman (snr) in 1994. It was spotted during the classing and grading process in the Bosman’s Lelienfontein nursery. Deep crimson in colour, the elegant wine shows flavours of blackberries, strawberries and violets with nuances of mocha and caramel.

The Bosman MCC Steen 2008 was made with grapes from a Chenin Blanc vineyard in the Bovlei Valley that was known for its lively minerality and pure fruit flavours. The result is a bubbly described by Corlea Fourie as “sunshine in a glass” – a wine resplendent in quince aromas and notes of unripe peach and apple.

The Bosman Erfenis is another Bosman Family Vineyards wine to return to the Top 100 SA Wines limelight. This red blend is a selection of the very best barrels of a particular vintage. The most current star, 2011, comprises Pinotage (32%), Shiraz (19%), Cinsaut (19%), Cabernet Franc (15%) and Merlot (15%). Fermented and matured in French oak, the wine offers concentrated flavours of brambles and red fruit with integrated spice.

Bosman Family Vineyards is an eighth-generation, family-run business based in Wellington. Over the years, the family has worked on a number of initiatives with its employees, many of whom have also worked on the farm for several generations. The estate is Fairtrade-accredited and a past recipient of the International Wine Challenge’s prestigious Fairtrade Trophy – an important indicator of South Africa’s leading premium ethical wine producers.
