Alto Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 scoops Grand Gold at Concours Mondial de Bruxelles

Alto Wine Estate in the so-called Golden Triangle outside Stellenbosch has been honoured with a highly coveted Grand Gold medal at the annual Concours Mondial de Bruxelles. The estate’s 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon walked off with the honour.

Over 8 000 wines from 45 countries were judged in Jesolo, Italy, by an international panel consisting of leading sommeliers, wine buyers, importers, journalists and wine writers. A total of 2 330 medals were awarded this year, with fewer than 1% of the 8 060 competing wines walking off with the coveted Grand Gold medal, which puts Alto’s magnificent performance in perspective.

“We are very honoured and extremely proud of this award, especially because it took place on such a distinguished stage ,” says Schalk van der Westhuizen, Alto’s cellar master. “Alto’s enviable reputation for the production of world class red wines can partly be ascribed to its excellent terroir, and it’s no coincidence that the estate is situated in what is locally called the Golden Triangle.”

Schalk describes this award-winning wine as plum red in colour with a bouquet of cherries, violets, black olives, some dark chocolate and a hint of tobacco. It’s full-bodied with a mouth-feel of cherry, tobacco and dark chocolate flavours, with a good tannic structure.

“Enjoy this wine on its own,” Schalk suggests, “or with steak, lamb, stews and casseroles.”

The Alto Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 retails for R180.

Alto Wine Estate is situated on the Annandale Road off the R44 between Stellenbosch and Somerset West.

Alto is part of Cape Legends, a collection of superlative quality, award-winning wines from several boutique estates situated in and around the Cape Winelands.  For more information about Alto and its wines, visit, email, call 021 881 3884 or make contact on or via Twitter @AltoWines.

Editor’s note

Winemaker Schalk van der Westhuizen: Schalk is only the fourth winemaker responsible for crafting red wine in the eight decade history of the Alto Wine Estate. He began his journey with wine when he was born in the Stellenbosch Winelands on Neethlingshof Estate. Armed with a passion for wine and his Elsenburg diploma, Schalk took over the reins from his father to manage the farm in 1973 and later went on to become cellarmaster.  He brings his deep and seasoned understanding of winemaking to Alto, where he has been a winemaker since the 2001 vintage. He says, “Winemaking is my life. It’s in my blood and my hands. It is what I know.”

The Cape Legends wine portfolio includes Allesverloren, Monis, Alto, Neethlingshof, Durbanville Hills, Plaisir de Merle, Flat Roof Manor, Pongracz, Fleur Du Cap, Red Escape, Hill & Dale, Stellenzicht, Jacobsdal, Theuniskraal, Le Bonheur, Uitkyk, Lomond and Zonnebloem. Also part of the collection are Place in the Sun and Earthbound, which are Fairtrade-accredited and therefore see workers on the farms empowered directly through sales of the wines.
